Cruel and Unusual Expectations
The above photo is just a portion of the clothing area where I’d worked at Walmart/Scam’s Club. Here’s a snapshot of how all those tables looked during the day and especially at the end of the day:
A total and a complete mess. Now, imagine being told that you have to organize all those disastrous tables of clothing and areas beyond those tables, i.e., ‘Display Boxes’ before you go home? It was called the ‘Closing Shift’ and there was an unwritten rule that the employee on the ‘Closing Shift’ didn’t go home until the entire clothing area was organized.
Now If That’s Not the Practice Of Slavery, What Is?
The store’s hours were Monday thru Saturday, 7am to 8:30pm and on Sundays, 10am to 6:30pm. During my ten months of employment, on my part-time status and an hourly wage of $11.50, if I was scheduled on the ‘Closing Shift’ I was usually the only employee scheduled. That’s why I’m convinced that at Walmart/Scam’s Club, I was expected to complete the work of four full-time employees.
Suffice it to say the ‘Closing Shift’ was a major reason employees abruptly quit. Well, that and the verbal assaults, threats, and intimidation tactics perpetrated by co-workers, supervisors, and managers.
Fuck You And That Horse You Came Riding In On
That’s exactly how I felt towards that unwritten rule about staying at work until the entire clothing area was organized. My momma didn’t raise no fool, so you betta believe if I was scheduled on the closing shift, I left as soon as my shift ended.
